The third AFC Wimbledon Minithon will be held in October. Eileen Samuelson, from the Dons Trust’s fundraising group, has details of this year’s event.
The Dons Trust is working with the AFC Wimbledon Foundation and the club’s Academy to stage Minithon 3, a 5km (3 miles) sponsored fun run to be held on Sunday 18 October in Morden Park. As with our previous Minithons, we are again supported by Terry’s Badges, who are generously providing Minithon 3 badges for all participants.
The emphasis is on fun, health and fitness, and fundraising. We will be raising money for the Dons Trust, for the Foundation’s community projects and for our Academy to help provide “homegrown and hungry” players for our future. The Foundation and the Academy will publish more details about the use of the funds raised in future programmes.
This is an event for anyone and everyone, for supporters of all ages, shapes and sizes: if you can run, walk or crawl 5km, then you can take part. And if you can’t do any of those things, then you can volunteer to help on the day, provide sponsorship or just come along and enjoy the fun.
The Dons Trust has already run two successful Minithons at the same venue, and we are hoping for lots of participants and spectators at this year’s event. As usual, participants will include Haydon, Erik, Neal and members of his management team, and players and staff from the Academy. You will be able to join in the fun run alongside them, or sponsor them online soon via the Foundation charity donation page.
The Academy is not a registered charity so we can’t claim Gift Aid, but runners will be given sponsorship forms to collect donations, and in addition we hope to have online pledge pages. We are beginning to see the very pleasing results of having a successful Academy, with a growing number of our own ‘homegrown and hungry’ players already in the first team squad.
So here’s what we would like you to do:
- Whether you’re going to enter, volunteer or just come along and watch, please put this event in your diary for Sunday 18 October. The start will be near the bandstand in Morden Park. We will have family activities and refreshments from 10.30 am, and the run itself will start at noon. On Sundays there is plenty of free parking in the swimming pool car park, near the entrance to the park.
- Get hold of an entry form (entry form in Word format or entry form in PDF format) and send it to the club with a cheque for the entry fee payable to the Dons Trust. The entry fee is £10 for adults and £5 for those aged 6 to 18; for those aged 5 and under, and for all Academy runners, no entry fee will be charged. You can also enter via the club shop.
- Persuade friends and relatives to take part – you can download a poster at the bottom of this page and put them on noticeboards and other suitable places.
- Volunteer to help – we will need help marshalling the course, face painting, tidying up afterwards, and so on. Volunteers should contact either Lewis Westlake at the Foundation or Sarah Skinner at the Academy.
Sponsorship forms will be sent out to people who register or can be downloaded (sponsorship form in Word format or sponsorship form in PDF format), or you can set up your own sponsorship page on the Foundation’s BT Donate website.
Fundraising guidance for those who have signed up to take part, including details of how to set up your own BT Donate page, can be found in the Sponsorship guidance.
Watch for further news in other matchday programmes and on the Dons Trust and club websites. In the meantime, if you have any queries or if you can volunteer some time to help, email the minithon team or leave a message for Eileen Samuelson on 020 8547 3528.
