Pub name revealed

We can finally reveal the result you’ve all been waiting for – our new Plough Lane pub will be called The Phoenix.

And, to honour our legendary manager Allen Batsford, the main stadium road that leads into our new ground and behind our main West Stand, will be called The Batsford Way.

Dons Trust Board co-chair, Jane Lonsdale, said: “The pub name has triggered a lot of interest and debate. Thanks go to all the 1,541 DT members who voted and delivered their verdict. Now we can all look forward to the day when we can gather with friends and family at The Phoenix.

“What was also clear was a significant number of members also wanted to honour Allen Batsford, as did the DTB and club.

“So I’m delighted that Luke Mackenzie (DTB and Honours Committee Member) has confirmed the committee will be honouring Allen – one of the greatest managers in our club’s history – by creating The Batsford Way “.

Xavier Wiggins (DTB co-chair) added: “It was great to get so much engagement from our members, the owners, on naming the pub. As part of transparency, the call for name suggestions saw 1246 individuals contributing.

“The DTB reviewed the suggestions and selected the most common suggestions for a shortlist. Voting was by DT members who had opted to receive email communications. Members could vote for up to two options, with the simple majority being the name of the pub.

“The final results of the vote were: The Phoenix (669); The Batsford Arms (539); The Plough (457) and The Sportsman (338).

“I’m also delighted that Allen Batsford’s name will live on at Plough Lane for ever – and that’s how it should be. The Honours Committee are also looking at how we pay tribute to others.”
